The Artist
A native of Arizona, lapidary artist Bud Standley grew up
near the copper mines. He learned to carve gemstones in 1971, at age
19, during the height of the Indian Jewelry craze that swept the
country. As the popularity of turquoise faded he began to experiment
with other copper minerals and was one of the first to explore
cutting azurite and chrysocolla as gemstones.
His work has been featured in:
- Bonhams & Butterfields Auction Catalogs
- February 1981 Lapidary Journal
- August 2007 Gem News from Pala International
- Freilich Minerals Carvings
- The Mineral and locality database at mindat.org

Bonhams & Butterfields state that "Expert lapidary work is
apparent in these free-form carvings by renowned azur-malachite
specialist Bud Standley. The richness of the concentric banding of
lighter blue against the deep indigo is revealed through the
excellent polish."
